On Sumba, luxury isn’t about grand lobbies or flashy service. It is all about space, quiet time, and respecting local culture. Arriving at Arya Sumba felt less like checking into a hotel and more like being welcomed into a peaceful beachside home. Sitting right on a clean, empty stretch of sand in the remote Kodi region, this place is perfect for anyone looking to truly slow down.
Village Style & Private Pools
The design of the resort immediately stands out. Instead of building harsh concrete blocks on the coast, Arya Sumba mirrors the island’s history. The individual bungalows are built in the style of traditional Sumbanese villages, featuring the iconic tall, thatched roofs you see in local communities.
Inside, the rooms are simple, bright, and comfortable. My villa felt like a completely private sanctuary. The best part was the private pool just steps from my bed. Spending afternoons listening to the ocean waves while relaxing in the pool, surrounded by green gardens, was exactly the kind of escape I was looking for.
If you were looking for some more life, then head down to the main pool where you’ll find a handful of other guests, all enjoying the tranquility of the location and the sound of the waves.
The Perfect Contrast
Arya Sumba sits almost right next door to Cap Karoso in that ‘just under an hour’ transfer time from the airport. The two properties could not feel more different. While Cap Karoso is a striking, massive monument to modern design, during my stay, it felt a bit empty, and lacking in soul. Arya Sumba is the exact opposite. It feels intimate, passionately friendly (whilst respecting personal space), and deeply connected to the island around it.
Even though the resort is still growing—there were building works going on for the new gym and spa and bigger villas during my stay—it didn’t ruin the relaxing atmosphere at all. The layout is so spread out, interspersed with lush greenery, and the sound of the ocean is so constant, that the construction didn’t bother me in the slightest. The peaceful vibe stayed completely intact.
Beachside Views & Local Horses
The beach location gives you a front-row seat to some incredible sights. During the day, if you’re looking for a little more sociability than your private pools, head down to the main pool where you might find a handful of other guests. In the evenings, the shoreline becomes magical. Local Sumba horses are brought down to the water to run along the sand giving guests and staff alike the opportunity of getting up close. Watching these beautiful animals against the backdrop of a bright Sumba sunset is something I will never forget.
Coastal Plates & Slow Soundtracks
The heart of the resort’s social scene beats at Nino Restaurant and Weiyo Beach Club, where the culinary experience balances fresh, local flavors with relaxed beachside comfort. The menu from the very talented chef, focuses heavily on vibrant Indonesian classics alongside casual, Mediterranean-inspired beachfront fare, treating guests to everything from locally caught seafood and local street food staples like nasi goreng and sate to comforting, fresh breakfast buffets.
Down at the bar, the bartenders mix exceptional drinks, but the absolute standouts are the El Niño cocktail—a perfectly balanced, refreshing blend that makes for the ultimate sunset drink to enjoy from an oceanfront daybed – and the margaritas.
As the afternoon transitions to twilight and the sun sets majestically and dramatically over the ocean (did I mention that lounging on the beach at Arya with a drink in hand watching the sun set is one of the most magical experiences), the soft, ambient music blending with the rhythmic crash of the nearby waves creates a soulful, laid-back soundtrack that perfectly mirrors the slow, easygoing pace of Sumba.
Wonderful Staff & Great Day Trips
While the scenery is beautiful, it is the people who make this place special. The amazing staff at Arya Sumba are genuinely warm and friendly. Their hospitality feels real and curious, not rehearsed.
They also put together fantastic day trips that made it easy to explore the local area. With a great guide and driver, I spent half a day visiting Ratenggaro, a stunning traditional village right on the ocean with incredibly tall roofs, Patani Pero, and Weekuri Lake, a crystal-clear saltwater lagoon that is perfect for a quiet swim.
Arya Sumba succeeds because it doesn’t try to hide the raw beauty of the island. It simply gives you a comfortable, beautifully designed place to enjoy it. It is a warm, soulful hideaway that feels alive, making it the perfect spot to unpack your bags and completely unwind.
