Tides Hotel, South Beach

When you think of Miami, what comes to mind first? The art deco buildings? The beaches? The sunshine? The party nightlife? The stars and movies? The Will Smith track? All of the above and more apply to Miami.

The majority of the art deco buildings in Miami are centred on Ocean Drive in the Miami Beach / South Beach area. Nestled amongst the brightly coloured buildings is Tides. Previously a much larger hotel, it has been sympathetically renovated and remodelled such that all 47 rooms now have beach views. The quality of the building and refurbishment is underlined when the lobby is a part of the Miami Art Deco walking tour.

Decked out in neutral white, beiges and sand colours with matching furniture, all rooms are suites and often much larger than condos back home. Rooms come with a flat screen tv, ipod docking station and dvds can be rented free from the hotel. Staff are attentive, friendly, super helpful and as a solo traveller, made me very welcome. Sure, there were a couple of minor glitches but I was there on a crazy busy weekend (mardi gras) and was nothing that would really detract from your enjoment.

The location of Tides ensures that there’s plenty of entertainment to be had outside of the hotel room. A short stroll across the road is South Beach – a glorious wide, white sand strip which runs north to south along the Atlantic Ocean and is dotted with individual and eye catching lifeguard towers. Tides has reserved sun loungers, just find the right shack on the beach, give the, your name and room number and they’ll do the rest. An ideal way to pass a couple of hours or longer.

The hotel also boasts a pool which is ideally  situated for afternoon sunshine, and is perfect after a morning of sightseeing if you don’t fancy the beach. There is waiter service but it can be a little tricky to get hold of.

The ground floor bar area is divine. In a morning it is the perfect location for breakfast, in an evening, let the bartenders do their thing and serve you a range of perfectly made and matched cocktails.

Surrounded by Art Deco design and furnishings if you’re lucky enough to spchoose The Tides for your stay in Miami, you’ll feel like you’re a star of a 1920s movie.
